2. HOLODOMOR REMEMBRANCE
... and the Germans from Russia

It's been 80 years since the beginning of a tragic period in history known as the Holodomor. Sadly, most people don't even know what the Holodomor is...

Holodomor literally means 'plague of hunger'. This week -- November 19-25 -- marks a time of remembrance. A time to remember the millions of people who starved to death in the Soviet Union during the man-made famine of 1932-33. And the famine only marked the beginning of oppression at the hands of the government.

The famine happened in Ukraine and affected the Germans from Russia ethnic group as well as the ethnic Ukrainians. Neither group was particularly interested in working the commune farms. And since Stalin's "Five Year Plan" was considered key to the survival of the Soviet Union, Stalin starved the people into submission.

Our feature film, 'Under Jakob's Ladder', is set in such a world. But it's not just a story of doom and gloom. It tells how some of these people were able to rise above bitterness and hatred and survive. Says screenwriter and producer Roberto Munoz, himself the son of a Holodomor survivor: "These people had an amazing capacity for survival. Not all survived. But my mother and grandmother are good examples of this. They had to leave father and husband behind when they came out during World War II. That must have been very hard for them. But they had a hope in them that Stalin could not kill."

'Under Jakob's Ladder' has been dedicated to the memory of the those who died and to those survivors who suffered during this time in history.
